  • The Sun Life Direct 2012 Funeral Costs Calculator

Funeral costs change every year and our new calculator is designed to help you look at average funeral prices in your area. It is useful to read these notes before using the calculator so you understand how we calculate the costs.

The calculator will estimate the average cost of a funeral based on your location in the UK and enable you to add any extras you think you may like, such as flowers or catering. You then have the option to record any personal wishes such as where you would like your ashes scattered or where you may like to be buried. You can also add songs or a particular reading you may like at your funeral.

Once you are finished we give you the option to print or email your choices so you have a record of it. By leaving a copy of your wishes somewhere safe you will be helping your loved ones with the planning of your funeral when the time comes.

    How we calculate Funeral Expenses

The Funeral calculator provides average costs, they are not exact and you and your loved ones may not want or need to include everything that we calculate in our basic costs. It is important to get quotes from a few funeral directors when you plan a funeral as they can vary greatly. Basic Funeral costs are given to us by Funeral Directors and include:

    1. Professional Services:

    • collection of the deceased within 20/25mile radius
    • all care of the deceased, robe and dressing
    • necessary arrangements; pre-paying of disbursements and attending to all essential documentation, making /receiving all necessary phone calls
    • use of the chapel of rest for viewing of deceased during normal working hours
    • provision of a hearse and one limousine with attendants (1 director and 4 bearers) for deceased and family to and from cemetery/crematoria
    • a mid-range, oak veneer coffin as a standard

    2. Clergy or officiates fees to conduct a service. Alternatively the costs of the humanist celebrant if you opt for a non religious service

    3. Doctors fees for certification (not required if you want a burial)

    4. Cost of the cremation or burial

    5. The following additional funeral costs were obtained through a customer survey in May 2012. Please note that the average costs for Northern Ireland and the Order notice costs for the North East are based on a small sample size and are included for completeness purposes and should be treated with caution.
